WORK IN PROGRESS:
Angel Solis’ finished artwork, shown in progress, won first place in the Congressional Art Competition and will hang in the nation’s capital.

Angel Solis, a senior at VNHS, won first place in the Congressional Art Competition for Congressman Tony Cardena’s district.

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district.

Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington D.C. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol.

Solis also has a chance to fly to Washington D.C. if he is chosen to represent district 29.

In addition, Yesika Guzman, 10th grade, won 2nd place and Janell Segura, 11th, won 5th place respectively.

“I had Angel in my class for two years and he is an amazing artist,” said his art teacher, Ms. Jennelle Song. “He is extremely creative, and I’m very proud of him. I really hope that he goes and makes a name for himself in the future.”
