Solar Eclipse at Van Nuys

August 18, 2017

A one in 100 year celestial occurrence will make its way to the states on Monday, Aug. 18. A solar eclipse is a rare event in which the moon covers the sun. In some areas in the US, the sun will be completely covered, perpetuating a two hour “night”. At Van Nuys High School, however, only 70% of the sun will be covered, displaying a “shadow” over the campus. Although the moon covers the sun, solar eclipses are still very dangerous to look at, and precautions should be taken to avoid eye damage. Originally, LAUSD was considering a 9:00 am to noon lockdown to prevent incidents with students accidently looking at the sun. However, the final decision was to have a normal school day throughout.

“Our school will be having a normal day with normal period transitions,” said Principal Yolanda Gardea. “Hopefully students will use their common sense and not look up to the sun.”
