NEWS: Van Nuys High School passes intensive three-day review with flying colors.
Administrators and teachers breathed a collective sigh of relief as the Accrediting Commision for Schools Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) released their preliminary findings on April 26 after an intensive three-day audit.
The initial report concluded that everything was on par with the expectations set by the commission.
“It was as good as it could get,” said Principal Yolanda Garcia.
The results were so outstanding that the committee members assigned Ms. Gardea the task of delivering the report to an audience of teachers, administrators, students and staff gathered in the cafeteria after school on the final day of the review.
The WASC committee members said that they were impressed with everything they saw at Van Nuys High School, especially the school’s diverse opportunities for students — from academics to extracurricular programs.
The committee members also commented on the school’s more than sufficient evidence of rigorous instruction and the wide variety of enriching curriculum they witness happening in classes, as well as the wide variety of curriculum offered.
Even though the report was exemplary, there were suggestions for improvement.
The report suggests that the school find more ways to implement Chromebooks in each classroom and encourage all teachers to use Edline for posting grades online.
The committee also suggests that Van Nuys High School administration continue its efforts to integrate more residential students into AP classes, while increasing the use of academic language in classroom.
The WASC Committee recommended the school receive a six-year accreditation, the maximum possible. The next WASC review would occur in the 2022-2023 school year.
“In my heart I always thought we were going to do well, but I am super proud of our students, teachers, and staff.” Said Ms. Gardea, “We have a really great school and it’s nice to be validated and for other people to see that.”
